“Palacio de Ratas Marinas” by NOD

Wednesday, November 24th, 2021 Featured Image for "Palacio de Ratas Marinas" by NOD

NOD has gone into the hotel business! In the not so distance past we explored his resort, “Paraiso Bay” while today we visit the “Palace of Sea Rats” – for those who haven’t been captured by the Imperial Armada and taught Español, that’s the English translation of “Palacio de Ratas Marinas” .

And just look at how much those dirty rotten scallywags are enjoying their brand new hotel! Clocking at 128×112 studs, it is absolutely massive and includes everything sea-worn buccaneer needs to recuperate after a length voyage…

NOD writes:

This magnificent hotel has recently been finished. The Palacio de Ratas Marinas is built on the beautiful bay. People who have a tax allergy like to spend their vacation here.

Captain Ironhook will love this hotel!

Some guests are enjoying a dip in the crystal blue waters, while others relax on the beach, and others bask under palm trees, hoping coconuts don’t fall on their heads.

The friendly staff will greet you with a warm welcome – your stay might start with a bang!

The floor and stairs of the entrance area are made of 20 carat marble with the finest roses grow next to it. As you can see, the entrance is guarded by some “friendly” staff.

Even the rabbit has something to eat!

Delicious mushrooms grow next to the wall – try some and let us know if they’re actually edible. Did you know Red Corsair, the infamous energy drink, is brewed from the red mushrooms? Unfortunately we’re unable to provide the recipe due to the patent.  Two children work hard (yes, they’re paid well, damn you!). The boy is busy collecting mushrooms while the girl trains a rabbit in time for Easter.

Wow, there’s even a sausage sizzle!? On a pirate island? WOW!

At the rear of the building, beer and hot dogs are available for one doubloon each. Just last month pirates boarded attentive Sea Rats discovered a ship loaded with beer and seized it immediately did everything in their power to prevent it from going to waste…

Hot dog and beer rum: perfect combination!

This is a family friendly pirate resort, complete with annoying kids. Outside the picture is a sales booth with Sea Rat Cola.

It’s a hot day, with shade provided by the palm trees but don’t look up in case a parrot needs to…

Tables are available for those who book in a advance. The pirate good sailor (with the brown hair and beard) charms two lasses with tales of his daring adventures. Although, he tends to exaggerate and embellish his noble deeds, while completing omitting he’s recently spent most of his time in the galley, peeling potatoes and scrubbing the deck most as punishment for some naughty escapades in Tortuga.

He look! The kids have got hold of 40487 Sailboat Adventure

Ah yes, a day at the beach, fishing and have funny, under the watchful eye of security.

Most people are havin’ fun on the beach… most.

Diego, the man on the left brandishing the hot dog and beer shouts “Hola!”. Lou Wega, grabs his guitar and heads over thinking one of his fans is calling out. But alas, Diego hasn’t even seen him, he wants to capture the attention of the drug dealer business associate with the bag.

Where’s all his other fish? DUH! He already had them for lunch!

Actually, he actually caught five fish earlier today. The woman looks envious.

Any Soldiers here to defend the hotel? Not quite, friendly staff will do for now…

There are so many fun things for an aspiring Sea Rat to do here!

“The Conquered Outpost” by Cjtonic

Wednesday, November 17th, 2021 Featured Image for "The Conquered Outpost" by cjtonic

What would one expect to meet at an Imperial Outpost? The Imperial Armada? Or Imperial Soldiers? Well, whatever you might have thought of, you certainly didn’t think of pirates, did you? It seems that The Conquered Outpost by cjtonic has indeed been conquered by pirates.

This is my first Pirates MOC: The Conquered Outpost. While designing it I realized how much fun I had back in the day when playing with the original Pirates sets. The model consists of the island, the small cave with the treasure hidden in the back behind the skeleton and a small house with fireplace and bedroom for the soldiers (now pirates).

Indeed this MOC does consist of all the things listed by cjtonic. Don’t believe me? Then feel free to jump overboard and never return see for yerself in the pictures below.

Come, ye be welcome no matter if yer right or if yer wrong!

A better look at the building. Seems that there are only few remains of the classic yellow colour that outposts always use

The Backstory

This Imperial Outpost was once conquered by the pirates who have been living there ever since. Only recently they discovered there was this treasure cave underneath the small island, but it took some time before someone dared to move the skeleton sitting in front of the entrance door.

I know that ye might be excited to find the treasure room right away, but before we explore the cave underneath and find the treasure, it would be best to check out local surroundings.
Main entrance to the building

How come Redbeard’s crew ended up here? No one knows…

Rum storage as the most important area of the build

What would a pirate’s life be without rum? Only sorrow and hard work, that be for sure!

Captain chatting with one of his crewmates

4+ Juniors Captain has come a long way since his initial appearance. Seems like he has managed to snatch a few of Redbeard’s men!

Cannon threats at the conquered outpost

Watch out, Popsy, the daft captain is about to shoot at ye!

Now that ye have got a good idea of the surroundings it would be best to give up the booty and walk the plank see the hidden cave with all the precious treasure this captain has been looking for.

Supposed exploration attempt that consisted of moving the skeleton who was blocking entrance to the cave

Oh look, a friendly face says hello!

Entrance to the treasure room

A poor soul who wasn’t so lucky. What would the room forward contain, I wonder?

Look at all this treasure! Forget all the pirate pubs in the world, this is the place I long to be!

Digital Instructions

What will the pirates do with all this treasure? Buy Black Seas Barracuda from Redbeard? Visit every pirate pub and taste every type of rum under the sun? I am not sure but you shall be delighted to know there is a chance for ye to own this very MOC as we speak! If ye visit Rebrickable, you may find that cjtonic has indeed added instructions for anyone to buy (with real money, reales, if ye prefer) this amazing build, you could be an owner today or tomorrow or any given day! All that is left is your decision, does this MOC interest you? Do you feel the need of expanding upon the lack of pirate related builds in your collection? Then head over to the website and buy the instructions today (we are not responsible for any purchases regarding anything LEGO related, only advertisements, purchase at yer own risk)!

But we be not done with an overlook of The Conquered Outpost, there are few more aspects you have to see to truly understand the masterpiece this build is.

At last, a top-down view, as if it were a map

“Trouble in the Tavern” by Captain Braunsfeld

Wednesday, November 10th, 2021 Featured Image for "Trouble in the Tavern" by Captain Braunsfeld

Pirates have been known to roam the seas for as long as we can remember, but what happens when they get thirsty? They can’t just simply drink sea water. No, they head to the nearest pirate pub tavern to have jolly good fun. The infamous Captain Braunsfeld has created this simple yet outstanding tavern to represent a classic Trouble in the Tavern.

Captain Braunsfeld writes:

Last Friday in the “Three Cannon Balls” tavern some trouble started, the usual trouble in a pirate tavern.

Initially I just wanted to build the interior of a pirate tavern, but then it seemed possible to have a somewhat decent outside too.

Tavern that seems to have trouble

Such a neat, classic look!

From outside Three Cannon Balls tavern looks like any other tavern in a modest town like Tortuga. It screams classic quite a lot. But inside it, chaos ensues as another Friday trouble has been caused due to one man insulting the other by dropping his glass of Rum to the ground.

A calm before the storm

You may insult a man’s family, steal his boat, but never, never do ye drop his glass of rum! Those two lads are really asking for it!

Fight begins in the tavern

That poor pig has to hang over some translucent plastic all day long!

And so the trouble begins! Tavern’s owner must have a rough time cleaning the place up every day. Is that Captain Brickbeard hiding himself on the right?

A better overview of trouble in the tavern

The biggest mystery to me and everyone else probably is the way how pirates get up to the second floor. Seriously, where’s the ladder?

An overview of the trouble in the tavern

No, better question – how does the owner get up to that supply crate at the very top?

Groovy angle of the tavern 1

Check out this groovy camera angle of the tavern!

Groovy angle of the tavern 2

And another groovy angle, just a little different, lets you better see the spilled glass of rum!

Ye might think, why is this amazing MOC being blogged in 2021, when it was presented in 2016? Well, no one is quite sure why this masterpiece was never blogged back in the day, but better late than never! No one can stop a trouble in the tavern, not even Imperial Guards, it just happens by itself, whether it’s an insult, spilled rum, bad chess game or even a challenge, these things are expected in Buckingham Palace any pirate tavern.

Now, better question would be – why didn’t you notice this MOC in 2016? Why weren’t you there when Captain Braunsfeld presented it? At this point it is too late for any apologies, time has passed but this masterpiece shall not be forgotten!

About the Builder…

Captain Braunsfeld is a very well known builder who has been contributing for a long time on LEGO Pirates forum, Pirate MOCs and Brethren of the Brick Seas. His builds are accompanied by humorous text and not only has he built land-based MOCs, he also has astonishing vessel contributions, one of his best known ships might just be HMS Colourless. At the moment, he has an ongoing Tulip selling series in BoBS game.

Besides his presence on Eurobricks, Captain Braunsfeld also has a Flickr account where he posts all his LEGO rum collections amazing MOCs, so be sure to check them out, trust me, it’s worth all the gold in the world.

“Magnetic North Frigate” by Professor Thaum

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021 Featured Image for "Magnetic North" by Professor Thaum

Professor Thaum works hard to keep the LEGO Pirates Forum orderly, but in his “spare” spare time he is also a fine ship builder.

Actually, the Classic Pirates were previously unaware of these talents as this MOC is his MOCing debut.

After two years of trial and error, he has launched the “Magnetic North“, a frigate with a unique turquoise colour scheme and custom sails.

BEWARE – this vessel is well crewed and carries 20 guns!

Custom sails and custom flags = extra time and effort

Broadside of the "Magnetic North"

Also, great attention has been paid to the rigging – this requires much patience!

Professor Thaum writes:

A 2 years job, with many restart.

Indeed, I was very interested by the “Grenouille” by MocYourBricks, but I’m afraid this is not my main inspiration. I started from some old pics describing a ship tumblehome – I can’t remember who send me those pics ( many years ago ) but I’m probably very close to the origin ( and those pics certainly inspired the Grenouille ).

There are many, many, many tips I borrowed in this ship, from many builders ( too many to remember who ) but there are still many ideas from my own.

To be honest, I have a bigger ship WIP with that kind of hull, and it was started 5 or 6 years ago (so before the Grenouille was posted/created – But sure the Grenouille is a wonderful ship ! No doubt!)

She’s got a fine wrack! Of maps that is. For the record; we’re talking about a map wrack..

The Inspiration

Professor Thaum studied hard to build this ship.

Professor Thaum's notes for building the "Magnetic North"

He took notes… the old fashioned way!

Diagrams Professor Thaum used when building the "Magnetic North"

He researched the old-fashioned way too! Yes, he read books!

Secret of the Sails

The professor shares some insight into the process he used to make the sails.

Diagrams Professor Thaum used when maing the sails

Too bad we don’t have an English translation

I have templates for each sails of the Hermione. Just have to put it on the scale.

The sails are made of white cardstock sheets of paper, 24 x 32 cm sized (I don’t know if this match any Anglo Saxon format).

The lining hemmed part is a double layer of paper (one very narrow and carefully cut and pasted on the sail) which is colored in blue with a felt-tip pen.

The sail seams are made with lead pencil and a ruler, so are rows of reefs (but much more thick).

The compass rose was printed on the paper by… a PC printer.

And the holes at the corners are made with a single puncher.

About the Builder…

Professor Thaum has been Regulating the LEGO Pirates Forum for some time now. Since he’s new to the world of building MOCs, he doesn’t have an Instagram and Flickr account where you can view more of his creations, but we’ll keep you posted in that changes.

Come now! Let’s discuss the “Magnetic North” in the LEGO Pirates Forum with Professor Thaum – just hit the red “Discuss In Forum” button below.
