“Rock Island Refuge” by CaptainDarkNStormy

September 7th, 2025 posted by JintaiZ Featured Image for Rock Island Refuge by Captain DarkNStormy

Whenever a LEGO building contest is held, it’s only natural  the winning entries receive the most attention, yet it’s important not to overlook the honourable mentions.

This was no exception in the Return of the Classic Pirates Contest, voraciously competitive with many competent entrants. While the winners well-deserved their position, Classic Pirates aspire to bring other great entries to your attention.

Rock Island Refuge” by CaptainDarkNStormy is one such build, a modernised rendition on yet another classic LEGO Pirates set from the days of yore.  The good captain arrived at the final build by effectively utilising feedback provided by the Creative Critics, so now we shall delve further into its creation…

CaptainDarkNStormy writes:

I think I’ve reached a final product. I’m going a way for work tonight so I won’t have time to make any more changes. Thanks to all you creative critics out there who provided me with insight. Without further ado…

Behold, Captain Redbeard’s newly renovated Rock Island Refuge. 31 years have passed since the famous menace of the Brick Seas took over this rocky isle. Now he and his crew have a place to relax and party in between plundering stints on the Barracuda. A second cannon and weapons cache have been added to defend against the pesky Bluecoats. The dock has been expanded and crane upgraded. Some secrets still remain though. Let’s see what the Island looks like in 2023.

Rock Island Refuge in 2023

So what does it look like in the modern age?

Here’s the overview

We arrive by raft just like in the 1991 set but get serenaded as we approach the docks

The Imperial Armada didn’t quite escape with the treasure…

The Raft

A defining play feature of the official Rock Island Refuge set is the inclusion of a raft; an auxiliary build which could happily exist as a set in its own right.

In fact, it draws parallels to 6257 Castaway’s Raft released a couple of years earlier.

The Raft from Captain DarkNStormy's Rock Island Refuge

This version boasts a cloth sail and wood texture pontoons

Captain DarkNStormy has spared no detail and also applied a modern makeover to the raft.

Raft from original 6273 Rock Island Refuge LEGO set

The original raft seemed a lot more “flatter”

Although, perhaps it could be argued this upgrade has undermined some key features of the original, for example;

  • the mast is far more prominent and positioned dead-centre on deck with a much larger sail
  • the oar rudder is absent
  • the deck is flat, whereas the original appears to be more precariously fashioned from whatever flotsam was available
The Raft with Captain DarkNStormy's Rock Island Refuge in the background

Also included is a barrel of fish and a seagull to eat them

Despite these revisions, Captain DarkNStormy’s raft is a welcome inclusion.  He’s corrected some design flaws, because seriously; who wants sail around on a draft with an incomplete deck at risk of their foot getting caught? A potential tripping hazard that results in stumbling overboard – a safety violation has been averted!

Work In Progress…

CaptainDarkNStory intermittently teased members of the Classic Pirates Facebook Group with progress images as the build gradually came together.

The Original 6273 Rock Island Refuge

6273 Rock Island Refuge was released in 1991 and included 381 pieces at a retail price of US$66, or approximately US$149 in 2023 when adjusted for inflation.

To obtain a brand new copy of this set today, you’ll have to shell out a whopping US$1,500 on markets like eBay

6273 Rock Island Refuge

The original Rock Island Refuge

Known as “Port Jamaica” in some waters, the original set was built upon a more verdant version of the ramped based plate that was introduced with 6278 Elorado Fortress.

Rock Island Refuge supplanted 6270 Forbidden Island as the Pirates dominant stronghold, with it’s more robust structure containing almost 200 more parts.

Raft from 6273 Rock Island Refuge

The raft again

All the staples of its predecessor are present; the jungle hideout comprised of black castle walls, rope bridges, ratlines, palm leave and barred dungeon. Along with mandatory piratical accessories which include; two printed Jolly Roger flags, both large and small, a treasure chest, barrel, flaming torches, cannon and treasure map.  Not mention the returning fauna; shark, monkey and parrot.

Being more grandiose than Forbidden Island, further innovation was required.  Aside from the base plate amplifying the fornication’s dominance, Rock Island Refuge offers a crane with rope to hoist cargo from the dock, a grated hold to store that precious cargo, a sizeable raft, and a piece exclusive to the set: a blue striped fabric sail.

Minifigures from 6273 Rock Island Refuge

Or just the buy minifigures

A crew of five pirate minifigures are stationed at the refuge, including Captain Redbeard and his usual cohorts, albeit colour-swapped slightly, and adorned with flintlock pistols, muskets and cutlasses.  Two blue coat Soldier minifgures make a daring attack on the docks, the commander charges forth with sabre drawn, although the pirates seemingly haven’t noticed.

Return of the Classic Pirates Contest?

The Return of the Classic Pirates Contest was building contest hosted by Eurobricks and Classic-Pirates.com between June and September, 2023.  Entrants were task with the challenge of developing new LEGO Pirate set concepts, or modernizing classic sets in the style of the classic 80s and 90s sets, or post-2020 modern sets like 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay.

The building entries were divided between a Main Building Category and a Mini Set Category, while a third category, the Creative Critic, was tailored towards literacy based participation.

10320 Eldorado Fortress Prizes

Eldorado Fortresses were on offer as prizes

Fabulous prizes were on offer, including two 10320 Eldorado Fortresses worth 215€ each.

Many fantastic entries were submitted and the Classic Pirates would loved to have awarded more prizes, but for this contest we were limited to a maximum of 5 winners. So unfortunately, great entries like CaptainDarkNStormy’s Rock Island Refuge only receive an honourable mention and our utmost respect for taking the time to participate!

About the Builder…

CaptainDarkNStormy (Chris Boyd) is one of those xennials who collected the first wave of classic LEGO Pirate sets back in 1989. As a teenager during the 90s he succumbed to his Dark Age, which persisted well into his adulthood. Fortunately for the LEGO Pirates fan base, his mother spared all his old sets for when he emerged in AFOL-dom during 2020.

In the 2020′s he’s a frequent contributor to the LEGO Pirates Forum and specializes in revitalizing Classic Pirates sets. Additionally, he contributes his spare time as a moderator for the Classic Pirates Facebook group which the Classic Pirates thank him for very much!

Dive into his Flickr stream and Instagram profile for the latest updates on his new builds, and if you’d like to create them yerself, he’s made some of his designs available on ReBrickable.

What Do Yer Think?

Has CaptainDarkNStormy built a worthy update to Rock Island Refuge?  Or could it be improved upon?  If you were remaking the set, what would you have done differently?

Rock Island Refuge by Captain DarkNStormy

Just image… if this were an officially released LEGO set…

Do you think this entry should have a won a prize in the Return of the Classic Pirates Contest? Maybe even first prize?

What is a Junk? (Asian Ship)

A junk be a traditional Chinese sailing vessel known for its distinctive design, remarkable durability, and historical significance across Asia.

Modern Junk (Traditional Asian ship)

Far from worthless “junk,” these ships are engineering marvels that dominated trade and exploration for centuries.

Key Features

Here be some traits which define this particular kind of ship:

  • Battened Sails:
Junk sails resemble Venetian blinds — reinforced with horizontal battens for strength and easy reefing. They could be adjusted quickly and required fewer crew to operate.
  • Flat-bottomed Hull:
Ideal for rivers and shallow coastal waters, with watertight bulkheads that improved safety and cargo capacity.

  • Central Rudder:
Unlike Western ships that used side rudders, junks had a stern-mounted rudder centuries ahead of European designs.
  • Multiple Masts:
Larger junks often had five or more masts, spreading sail area for speed and stability.

Historical Significance

Junks first set sail around the time of the Han Dynasty (circa 200 BCE). These vessels weren’t just sturdy — they grew more cunning and evolved with the winds of time, throughout the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties.

Junks weren’t just for haulin’ treasure — they sailed for war, trade, and discovery. Most famously Admiral Zheng He, who’s fleet boasted ships near 120 metres / 400 feet long — bigger than galleons, bolder than Loong myths!

From the harbors of Japan to the deltas of Vietnam and the spice-swept isles of Indonesia, these Eastern sea crafts left their mark. Shipwrights far and wide took a page from the junk’s cunning design — her stout hull, flat bottom, and cunning rudder — crafting their own variants to brave monsoon winds and merchant treachery alike.

The build features two garitas, these be the two sentry boxes overhanging the walls.

Once a common feature of fortresses or coastal defenses, especially in Spanish colonial architecture.

The Imperial Armada?

In a previous post we postulated the minifigures of Coconut Cape were inspired by the Imperial Armada.

And in the time since, @Classic Pirates asked @BallisticBricks for clarification via Instagram:

Screenshot of Instagram post asking BallisticBricks about Imperial Armada minifigures

How interesting – but don’t set yer hopes too high!

BallisticBricks replied:

@Classic Pirates thank you! Yes they were roughly inspired by them, although the Bricklink palette for this series was quite limited and this was the best I could come up with. They are subject to change slightly for the final version though so keep an eye out!

Morions

Morion” be the name of the helmet worn by Imperial Armada minifigures.

Could this sub theme be resurrected without their trademark headwear?  It’s a defining part of the minifigures’ identity.

Minifig comparison between Coconut Cape imperials and the classic Imperial Armada

Retrieving the morion piece from the LEGO part archive is perhaps wishful thinking.

After all, each BrickLink Designer series has a predefined palette, so in the interest of efficiency, the intent is to adhere to that collection of parts.

Imperial Armada Subtheme in the 1996 LEGO Catalog

The entire Imperial Armada subtheme – just two sets…

But in the interest of authenticity, imagine if a retired part could be resurrected upon rare occasions.

T’would go leagues towards ensuring the exclusivity of BrickLink Designer sets, and honoring the legacy of classic LEGO themes, rather than churning out fan designs as economically as possible.

Now What?

After Coconut Cape survived the BrickLink Designer Program review, BallisticBricks was no doubt bound to an oath of secrecy and can divulge no further.

"Coconut Cape" will undergo refinement

Let’s hope for some Armada magic during the Refinement phase

BallisticBricks shall collaborate with Model Governance Team to revise the build for public consumption.

The tides o’ time shall eventually reveal how the design and minifigures evolve…

3D Overview

Pictures be one thing, video be another.

To whet the insatiable appetites of hungry fans, this gorgeously rendered animation will give yer a nice tour around the fortress.

Along with the other Series 8 finalists, t’was announced Coconut Cape will commence Crowdfunding (pre-orders) on 1 June, 2026 at 8 AM Pacific time.

About the Builder…

BallisticBricks be a renowned AFOL content creator with a YouTube channel and Flickr stream packed full of World War I and II LEGO animations, Coconut Cape being the first foray into the world of LEGO Pirates.

Beyond that BallisticBricks is active on Instagram givin’ yer a peak at recent builds, away from the trenches, and spanning the broader sea of time.

Economics

Coconut Cape be a tad smaller than Thieves of Tortuga and Privateer Frigate Fortuna, both blocking in at around up 4,000 parts.

But even a set containing around 2,500 parts is still beyond the grasp of some fans; be their coffers too low, or their cabins too cramped to stash a bounty of larger brick-built marvels.

Scalawag Sloop and 6268 Renegade Runner

Scalawag Sloop: a small ship can be a good ship!

So maybe the BrickLink Designer Team could take this onboard in future series and Crowdfund a smaller pirate design in the interest of accessibility.

Popcorn Wagon, another Series 5 finalist contains 594 parts, comparable to that of Scalawag Sloop.

What Do Yer Think?

What thinks you of Coconut Cape, the first BrickLink Designer Program imperial fortress?

Or be there a finer Series 8 submission ye’d rather welcome into your collection?

"Coconut Cape" by BallisticBricks

How much different will the final version be from this?

Could this be an opportunity for the Imperial Armada to make their triumphant return?  Or should another new imperial faction be introduced?

And be there tweaks you’d make to the build?

Pintel and Ragetti from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise

Is it even possible to have Pintel with Ragetti?

Or just maybe Ragetti will surface in a future set… a cunning strategy to entice you to acquire that set too, should you wish to reunite him Pintel.
