THE ADVENTURES OF THE

LEGO SYSTEMâ„¢ PIRATES

OF THE SEA

ROCK ISLAND REFUGE

During the 18th century, a peaceful
colony of settlers enjoying the island treasures
they discovered, suddenly had their serenity
interrupted. The invaders were those who called
themselves the LEGO SYSTEMâ„¢ Pirates of the
Sea!

For years, the Pirates had been searching
for the same buried treasures that the settlers
were now claiming as their own. This, of course,
disturbed the Pirates, as they knew the doubloons
(Spanish gold coins) the settlers found had
belonged to their ancestors.

On a remote rocky island, Captain Red
Beard and his crew of Pirates established the
ultimate command post. Called the Rock Island
Refuge, it was the perfect haven for the entire
crew of the Black Seas Barracuda. From this
outpost, Captain Red Beard commanded the
efforts of the other buccaneers at the Forbidden
Island and Shipwreck Island enclaves.

The day was drawing near when the
treasure chest full of doubloons would once
again belong to the Pirates. Before that day
could arrive, however, Governor Broadside and
the other settlers would have to be overcome.

IMPERIAL FLAGSHIP

(Spanish gold coins) the settlers found had

Many years ago, a wealthy king
summoned the best shipbuilders to design and
build what is known as the Imperial Flagship.
He called to duty the finest Soldiers to guide his
ship on a journey across miles of ocean. Their
mission was to retrieve millions of dollars worth
of treasure he had hidden on a deserted island.
The Soldiers, thinking this an easy task, were
not prepared for what was ahead of them.
Spotting the royal ship leaving the deserted
island, the Pirates knew instantly what the
Soldiers were carrying aboard the ship. Will the
Soldiers be able to protect the king’s royal
treasure from the Pirates?

OF THE SEA

FORBIDDEN ISLAND

Sometime during the 18th century, a
peaceful colony of settlers enjoying the island
treasures they discovered, suddenly had their
serenity interrupted. The invaders were those
who called themselves the LEGOLANDâ„¢ Pirates
of the Sea! For years, the Pirates had been
searching for the same buried treasures that the
settlers were now claiming as their own. This, of
course, disturbed the Pirates as they knew the
doubloons (Spanish gold coins) the settlers found
had belonged to their ancestors.

Forbidden Island was named by the
settlers because to them it was forbidden. It was
the island where only Pirates could live.

It was there that Captain Red Beard and the
other buccanneers made plans to “steal” the gold
from the settlers. Little did the Pirates know,
however, that the settlers had Governor Broadside
guarding the gold and that they would have to
deal with him first if they wanted it.

The Governor lived for the day he would
have to defend the Eldorado Fortress and the
gold. What he did not know was that the day of
confrontation would be coming soon…

ELDORADO FORTRESS

Sometime during the 18th century, a
peaceful colony of settlers enjoying the island
treasures they discovered, suddenly had their
serenity interrupted. The invaders were those
who called themselves the LEGOLANDâ„¢ Pirates
of the Sea! For years, the Pirates had been
searching for the same buried treasure that the

course, disturbed the Pirates as they knew the
doubloons (Spanish gold coins) the settlers found
had belonged to their ancestors.

Knowing that the Pirates would come
looking for the gold, Governor Broadside,
governor of the settler colony, sent a message to
all of his men to meet him at the Eldorado Fortress.

It was in the Fortress that the Governor
made plans to protect the settlers treasure.
Beneath the Fortress floor was a passage way.
It was there that the Governor decided the gold
should be kept so that it would be safe from the
Pirates. Part of his plan was to unload the gold
from the ship, the Caribbean Clipper, and move
it to the Fortress. He wondered what adventures
lay ahead…

CARIBBEAN CLIPPER

The gold the settlers found on a neigh-
boring island needed to be transported back to
their Fortress so that it could be kept hidden
from the Pirates.

The crew aboard the Caribbean Clipper
was called to action. Their task was to return the
gold safely to the Eldorado Fortress at whatever
cost. Once they reached the Fortress, Governor
Broadside would take over and find a safe place
to hide the gold.

The crew was a group of very proud men.
They would not let anything or anyone come
between them and the gold. The Pirates, however,
had other plans…

Classic Pirate Minifigures – The Stripey Bandanas

The Stripey Bandana Boys – Pirates

One of the most common Classic Pirate Minifigures, yet a very historical minifig.

This troublesome lot were possibly the most common of all the LEGO® Pirate minifigures, yet they are some of the most respected. They always seemed to be around, whether it was working as an imperial sailor on 6271 Imperial Flagship, or a pirate on 6285 Black Seas Barracuda, 6286 Skull’s Eye Schooner, 66290 Redbeard Runner, 257 Castatway’s Raft, 6267 Lagoon Lock-up, 6276 Eldorado Fortress, 6279 Skull Island, 6277 Imperial Trading Post, 6273 Rock Island Refuge, 1729 Barnacle Bay, 6259 Broadside’s Brig, 6261 Raft Raiders, 6268 Renegade Runner, 6235 Buried Treasure, 6260 Shipwreck Island, 1871 Pirate Cannon, 1733 Shipwrecked Pirate, 6252 Sea Mates, 6247 Bounty Boat, 6258 Smuggler’s Shanty, 1788 Pirate’s Chest, 6262 King Kahuka’s Throne, 6264 Forbidden Cove, 6266 Cannon Cove, 6261 Raft Raiders, 6254 Rocky Reef, 1970 Pirate’s Gun Cart, 1481 Desert Island and 6251 Pirate Minifigures.

The Bandana Boys, the crew of the pirates of the LEGO® Pirate line. They weren’t really rebellious pirates – they always did what they were told and neverThe third stripey bandana boy was just as obedient as his friends tried mutiny. Which is strange, because they worked for two captains, Captain Redbeard and Captain Ironhook both of whom were bloodthirsty, crew-hating minifigs. But no, they went along with their commanders’ practices of fighting off the Imperial Soldiers and their leader Governor Broadside and the Imperial Guards and their leader Admiral Woodhouse as well as attempting to steal the treasure of King Kahuka and his Islanders. But that last one was often a failure. These minifigs ran right from the start of the pirate line up to the very end, and they will be remembered by all who they served and all who didn’t serve them.

6243 Brickbeard’s Bounty

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

Finally, this is what we were waiting for: Captain Brickbeards Bounty, the new Pirate flagship that will lead the attacks against the also new Imperial Guards!

No less then 8 minifigs, and that includes 2 Imperials and one Governor’s Daughter, come with this mighty set. Also included: 3 animals (a parrot, a shark and a monkey that carries a banana), a soldiers sloop with a mounted musket and a large treasure. The battleship itself seems to have three cannons and some secondary weapons like the mounted muskets on the stern!

Take what you can, give nothing back!

"Take what you can, give nothing back!"

We can also see that the Bounty is better suited for a more extensive age group then its predecessors, mainly due to the larger bricks and the fact it lacks some details as rope for the sails which could be dangerous for little children. Not that we are going to buy one for our kids yet… One for me, one MISB for in the vault and then, just maybe, if we have some spare money AND children, a cheap second hand one for them.

Lord Admiral Phes: “Now set sail for the Pirates forum, to discuss Brickbeard’s Bounty, the proud of the new 2009 Pirates line!”

8396 Soldiers Arsenal – Pirates 2009

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

This miniset represents an Imperial Guard soldier that wears blue epaulettes, a backpack and a shako. He also owns a cutlass, a musket and a pistol to defend himself against the evil wicked pirates! The small arsenal “chest” comes with this set to keep everything organized. The military way!

Click here to discuss this new Pirates 2009 set : Soldiers Arsenal (8396) in the Classic Pirates forum!

An amazing armybuilder!

Oh, you would just love to have some of these, wouldn’t you? (Bonaparte and Zorro certainly do)! Except for creating a giant battle between Pirates and Imperials, this impulse set seems to be a great way to build yourself a Napoleonic army as well!

Now go to the Pirates forum to discuss Soldiers Arsenal, a new Pirates 2009 impulse set!

Classic Pirate Minifigures ~ Imperial Soldiers

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

Imperial Soldiers were the first men of authority in the LEGO pirate worldImperial Soldier

The Imperial Soldier was the backbone of the imperial forces before the Imperial Guards led by Governor Broadside came into the picture. Like their red counterparts, the Imperial Soldiers wore shakos, some of the most rare LEGO&reg pieces currently on the Bricklink market.

They appeared in the sets 6271 Eldorado Fortress, 6267 Lagoon Lock-up, 6265 Sabre Island, 6273 Rock Island Refuge, 6259 Broadside’s Brig, 6270 Forbidden Island and 6251 Pirate Minifigures.

They constantly fought battles with Captain Redbeard, but by the time Ironhook came into the picture, the Imperial Guards had already taken control of the seas. Or so they thought. Captain Redbeard had come back in the last few years of the Classic Pirate line and the Imperial Armada was left to repel him and his pirates. Perhaps the Imperial Soldiers should have returned to tame the pirates…

6239 Cannon Battle – Pirates 2009

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

Cannon Battle (6239) is a small set, larger then the impulse packs but smaller then eg. Loot Island. Still it is one of the best value packs considering the amount of bricks you receive. You get two minifigs: one Imperial Guard and one Pirate with some handweapons. It is the cannon that is one of the most expensive items in this expansion pack though, and next to all these things you also receive a small background wall.

I want to be the soldier...

I want to be the soldier...

My conclusion is that you get quite a bit for a measly 5,99 dollars, therefore this is a great expansion pack, one you need if you buy the fortress that only comes with one cannon!

Now rush to the Pirates forum to discuss this new 2009 Pirates set: 6239 Cannon Battle!

PICTORIAL REVIEW: 1733 & 1713 Shipwrecked Pirate

Sunday, January 1st, 2006
Yaaarrrr...no food or rum drives me crazy!

Yaaarrrr...no food or rum drives me crazy!

This set is merely an economised version of 6234 Renegade’s Raft and I don’t find it very exciting at all. There isn’t really anything clever about this set either and its design isn’t anything new or innovative. The rafts in 6248 Volcano Island and 6296 Shipwrecked would make better standalone sets.

What’s could be put to good use in a MOC… The mini-figure… A flag… An oar… An antenna… And that’s it! This set is very disappointing as it lacks content, creativity and innovation. 1 star…

Classic Pirate Minifigures ~ Admiral Woodhouse

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

Admiral Woodhouse, leader of the Imperial Guards

Admiral Woodhouse

In early 1992, a new face of authority appeared. It was time for the Imperial Guards. And at their lead was Admiral Woodhouse. Apart from sporting a lovely red uniform and his different colour hair, he differed very little to his predecessor, Governor Broadside.

He appeared in a few sets including 6263 Imperial Outpost, 6277 Imperial Trading Post and 6271 Imperial Flagship. So he was somewhat less rare than his blue counterpart, but seems to be more favoured amongst the AFOL community.

Although he lasted longer, 1992 – 1995, he still had just as many troubles with the pirate Captain Redbeard, and later, Captain Ironhook. After 1995, the Imperial Armada took over toward the end of the Classic Pirates era. Woodhouse has captured the attention of many a pirate collector, and it was somewhat a dissapointment to see him go at the end of 1995, but the epic battles between the Imperial Guards and the pirates under his watch will be remembered forever.
