“ETTC Warehouse, Black Beach” by EvanCelt

Wednesday, December 28th, 2022 Featured Image for “ETTC Warehouse, Black Beach” by EvanCelt

Star Brethren of the Brick Seas contributor, EvanCelt has painfully set aside his DUPLO to utilise more traditional foundations for this MOC.

Notorious for his Imperial Guard creations (or “East Terran Trading Company” in the BoBS universe), he’s expanded his repertoire of structures with a warehouse, situated on top of a volcano – we just hope it’s dormant!

EvanCelt writes:

The East Terran Trading Company has established a warehouse in the Corlander settlement of Black Beach on Gunpowder Island. The island is distinctive because it has a volcano in the interior, resulting in black sand beaches. Gunpowder Island is rumored to have rich veins of copper and abundant saltpeter, which provide ample reason for the ETTC to express interest. While the settlement is still fledgling, ETTC clearly sees the importance of the future resources to be extracted.

Legend has it, the island is also inhabited by hostile natives, so a compliment of ETTC sepoys secure the facility.

Imperail Flag on Guard Tower of Warehouse

A soldier from the nearby Martello Tower brings a bag of outgoing mail to the warehouse, where it will ship out for Port Woodhouse.

Front of Warehouse

A friendly monkey helps stand guard, while an even friendlier seagull patrols the westernshore

“Scorpion’s Soul” by Hass Kabal

Wednesday, December 21st, 2022 Featured image for "Scorpion's Soul" by Hass Kabal

Do you ever lie awake at night and wonder what the ultimate pirate ship should look like? To begin with, would it be a nimble sloop of war, a mighty galleon, or even a man-o-war? How many guns? How many masts and sails? And by God, what fearsome name should it bear?

So many choices! No wonder sleep cannot find a torture soul when tormented with a project of such grandeur.

No matter how daunting the task may seem, this did not deter master builder and 10K LEGO Ideas club member Hasan Kabalak from doing more than mere wondering, as he took upon challenge and produced the Scorpion’s Soul, his ultimate pirate ship.

Hass Kabal writes:

I’m in love with the Pirates theme and this is how I decided to build this ship.

Back in time, LEGO released the Pirates of the Caribbean sets, and therefore their new ship. I took it and did it with great pleasure. Then I thought why not bigger?

I wanted to build a ship with a systematic design just like it, but larger and for pirates, like the Imperial Flagship as an example, which was designed with flat system construction stages.

So came the Scorpion’s Soul.

Imperial Flagship the inspiration

Forget about those LEGO Harry Potter and Star Wars bookend ideas! If ye have a pirate library, all yer need is a huge ultimate pirate ship and one a seriously big shelf!

Released in 2010, with a fantastic design and a whopping 1664 piece count – a record for its time, the 10210 Imperial Flagship captured the hearts of many within the LEGO Pirates community. For the first time Imperials had the upper hand over the treacherous Pirates in terms of vessel size and raw firepower.  It should not come as a surprise that the Imperial Flagship, along the Pirates of Caribbean movies, inspired Hasan to balance the scale of power back to pirates favour.

The Ultimate Pirate Ship

The Scorpion's Soul from the front

Although the whole ship is worthy of closer inspection, its most distinctive features is the gorgeous handcrafted sails tailored from shiny satin style fabric and then meticulously painted

The Scorpion's Soul from the side

Hasan says that it takes him around a month to produce the whole set of sails. It’s not fun, but even to this day he gets orders only for sails, since people will always pay for a good handjob (hmm… that came out wrong!)

The fearsome Scorpion's stern

Master builders somehow never fail to amaze us with exceptionally beautiful sterns

The Captains Red Hook cabin

The captain’s cabin is another work of art with it’s gorgeous round balcony, curvaceousness and a huge glass window with printed scorpion motive

Detachable Poop Deck

To maximise playability and ensure an easy access to the captain’s quarters, the poop deck is detachable

The Red Hook's bed

Hasan ensured that Captain Red Hook has everything a good captain needs; a nicely made bed, an office table with a map and a trash can

The stairs to the poop deck

The stairs leading up to the strong and formidable forecastle

The main deck and the stairs

The stairs leading down to the ship’s hold and surely stocked with a vast treasure hoard

The bow from above

The forecastle features one but deadly chase gun and two gunners

The bow and figurehead

The figurehead depicts an fearsome figure resembling an angel of death, holding a scorpion and a trident, probably plucked right out of Poseidon’s hands

Imperial Flagship comparison

And finally, a real life comparison of the Scorpion’s Soul against the Imperial Flagship. How do you like your odds now Governor Tierney?

Captain Red Hook and the Crew

Captain Red Hook and his hook

The Scorpion’s Soul is captained by the legendary Red Hook, allegedly descendant of the evil Lord Vladek

Captain Red Hook and the crew

The entire crew, featuring even Captain Redbeard who is somehow ok in the role of a subordinate (but for how long…)

More jobs on the ship

How could this be the ultimate pirate ship if it didn’t have a fully operating galley below the forecastle, mess hall and a crew sleeping quarters in the stern

Various jobs on the ship

Life at sea demands fulfilling various jobs of great important; from keeping a lookout for sails on the horizon, to piloting, drinking on a job, all the way to feasting and more drinking…

Captain Red Hook in command

That and more, under the watchful and menacing Captain’s eye (hmm… someone should inform He-Man that we found his sword)

Where’s the Scorpion now?

Hasan Kabal continues:

Unfortunately, I sold the model I made for myself years ago. There was a lot of demand and I couldn’t turn it down.

I also sell the digital design. Many people bought and made it. Once in a while, there are those who make the ship but cannot make the sails. Upon their request, I make and sale completely handcrafted new sails.

It’s exciting to have my own design included in people’s LEGO collections. I come across it on many social media posts and I like it very much when I see it.

Did you know that Scorpion’s Soul was also on LEGO Ideas where it became stuck on 2,573 votes and failed miserably because YOU (present company included) did not do your part and pledge yer support? Now You know and we hope you are happy with yourself (present company included).

Oh well, to err is human… and now before we wrap this nice blog-post, we can at least enjoy for a minute or two in the original Scorpion’s Soul video made over a decade ago, back in 2011.

About the Builder…

Hailing from Constantinople (modern day Istanbul you ignorant scallywags) Hasan Kabalak a.k.a Hass Kabal is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to building smart and stunning MOCs. Some even say he is related to the Barbarossa the Pirate, one of the most infamous pirates of the 16th century who gave the Spaniards and Italians a tough time. Maybe he is, maybe isn’t, we don’t know, but we do know that Barbarossa would not object to getting his wicked hands on the Scorpion’s Soul.

Hasan can be found on the all popular social media platforms where he regularly shares his ideas:

If you are interested in obtaining building instructions or 3D digital files, you can do so by visiting his Rebrickable profile.

Last but not least, Hasan is also a member of the LEGO Ideas rejected 10K Club, where he gave an insight about his brick passion in an interview worth reading.

What Do You Think?

Now be honest, is this the ultimate pirate ship? Would you like to own one, or do you already? Do you think Governor Tierney should be worried about his much smaller Imperial Flagship? Would Captain Redbeard agree to share the high seas with Captain Red Hook? Do tell, we are waiting for your comments at the LEGO Pirates Forum.

“Treasure Island” by Filibbooo

Wednesday, December 14th, 2022 Featured Image for "Treasure Island" by Filibbooo

Ever since its publication in 1883, Treasure Island, by Scottish author Robert Lewis Stevenson, pirates have captured the hearts and imagination of every generation with a sense of wonder and thirst for adventure. Not only that, the novel completely reshaped our ‘modern’ view of the wicked Pirates.

No longer cut-throats, rapists, scoundrels and all, we see them now as a cunning band of brothers, who have peg-legs, talking parrots and their own code. Their only flaw is the insatiable thirst for gold, which is conveniently buried on an idyllic tropical island, under the X-mark.

One of those spellbound boys, now grown man who still cares for Pirates, is Captain Filibbooo who returns to us with his version of the Treasure Island, and quite possibly the best version available which would impress even Stevenson himself.

The hanging bridge

An epic shot which encapsulates the essence of adventure with a hint of intrigue

Finally, I finished it! It took me nearly 3 weeks to create it from scratch. I used about 6,000 parts. Some days I got stuck a little bit, because I had no plan how to continue. Additionally I ran out of parts, so that I immediately ordered new ones.

The rock-work was really challenging. Especially the rock arch on the beach. The hanging bridge also was an adventure to build.

The island is divided into 2 modular bases (48×48). It can be connected to my LEGO IDEAS “Imperial Outpost”

Unfortunately I haven’t created instructions for this island yet. But to be able to rebuild it again, I should. Hope you’ll like it!

Do we like it? We love it! But, this is not the first Treasure Island that we know of. In 2015, riding on the success of the POTC theme, LEGO tried to bring back the Pirates theme with 6 sets, one of which was the 70411 Treasure Island.

Was this in any way inspiration for Filibbooo, we don’t know, and we don’t care, but as you’ll see throughout the post, the similarities between the two are striking (once you pare back the 5000 bricks and plates which stand in the way.)

Treasure Island MOC vs original set

Treasure Island MOC and the original set… remarkably similar, except the missing skull carved in the stone

Grand Tour Around the Island

The beach and the arch

The island’s west side features a gorgeous sandy beach, where, among arrays of activities, pirates wanna-bees can go tanning or crab hunting, all at their pleasure in the island’s all-inclusive offer

The island pier

The west side is also the most accessible side with a well maintained pier where Redbeard’s daughter, Princess Argenta, cheerfully winks at the new visitors

The rock prison

First Mate Rummy responsibly drinks patrols the trail from the beach up and down, while keeping his only eye on the long deceased prisoner named Number Six

Removable top of the prison

To ensure playability, and give easier access to Patrick McGoohan the skeleton prisoner, one section of the mountain top can be easily removed

The beach and the bridge

Further along the breathtaking topside of the island, a totally secured and reassuring bridge connects two sides of the deep chasm

The crock awaits

The island has its own spring of clean water, flowing down from the mountain top in the form of the most spectacular waterfall

The crock from the top

However, the task of resupplying the reserves of fresh water can be hazardous for pirates’ health. Better stick to rum for a time being

Overview of the island

Aerial image of Treasure Island, taken with one of those cheap drones well trained parrots. Hey look, sea turtles hatching

The hatching of the turtles

While thinking about the wildlife, Filibbooo had a clear image of a turtle nest, something he has never seen on any other MOC, which is strange, because they fit perfectly in the scenery, as do sharks, parrots and the monkey. And, speaking about the devil, where is Spinoza?

The cave full of treassure

The far east side of the island marks the X spot, the treacherous cave filled with the hidden treasure and deadly traps… where only the brave enter and a lucky few escape

Cave full of treassure

Long John Silver (one leg missing) guards for eternity the legendary treasure of Treasure Island

The clever cave system

While this may look like something seen only in a James Bond movie, it’s actually a clever way to gain easy access to the treasure cave without losing any structural integrity of the cliff. Nice

The island from behind

Nietzsche remarked there are no beautiful surfaces without terrible depths, and he is right, as the adverse cliffs of the north side remind us that even a paradise island has its dark side

The Imperial Outpost

Sometime during the pandemic of 2020, Captain Filibboo vowed to fulfil his days with meaning, and thus chose to build LEGO Pirates sets. A year later he made a noticeable splash with his LEGO Ideas submission “Imperial Outpost“, which sparked an idea of a much bigger dream, a dream of a Pirate modular set! Ambitious idea, which many had but few, if any, accomplished.

The complete modular set

Imperial Outpost combined with Treasure Island in a Pirate modular set, Filibboo’s dream shared by many in the community

If we had any reservations toward his modular dream, those doubts are now gone and we can only guess what comes next from this talented builder; a Redbeard galleon, an Admiral Woodhouse Imperial Flagship, or maybe something completely different, like the Indigo Islander template? We shall wait and see…

About the Builder…

Captain Filibbooo is one of those rare builders who does not need about the builder section, as his amazing work speaks volumes for itself. But, seeing that we are already here, let’s share some more info about him.

He hails from Germany, the fatherland of several outstanding contemporary Pirate builders (must be something in the rum over there), and when he is not building remote outposts and islands, he enjoys flying in his own a rented plane. While not a licensed captain, once inside the cockpit, he does not mind to be addressed as such.

He also likes to share his latest creations and projects on Instagram and Flickr. For his more audacious quest to bring back the pirates, go and support his submissions on LEGO Ideas.

If you are brave enough, come down to our Pirate forum and meet the man for yourself. If you feel intimidated by his lavish use of bricks, simply leave him a praise or question inside the comments regarding this creation.

Maxim I, Prince of Garvey brings us a word of cheer! You know how Lord Damaximus got his dacks off and then knocked up Princess Margot? No? Well, neither did the Classic Pirates.

Not to worry! Nine months later they’re proud to announce the arrival of Princess Féline. Aye, she’ll be arriving by boat at 3 o’clock sharp… Wait! They named their kid after cats?

Maxim writes:

Launched in January ‘21, Princesse Féline is a small royal yacht

A small admiralty vessel for MAESTRO, which will be used to increase ship levels and can be licenced in the future as a class 2 trader

I would also like to thank @Sebeus I for his feedback during the process and for his wonderful inspirational ships

The Backstory

Just before the fleets would sail out, a new admiralty yacht sailed around the harbor. Loud cheers erupted everywhere they passed as it was in this small yacht that Lord Damaximus and Princes Margot showed the world their little Princes Féline.

About the Builder…

Maxim I is a talented ship builder and regular contributor to the Brethren of the Brick Seas game hosted by the LEGO Pirates Forum.

You’ll find a generous back catalog of his previous builds on Flickr and Instagram, which includes a superbly crafted fleet of historic ships, more pirate-themed creations and forays into other historical themes. Maxim also has enough flare to sail into modernity and apply his skills to automotive vessels like a Chevy-Impala.

Now let’s congratulate Lord Damaximus and Princes Margot in the LEGO Pirates Forum for Princes Féline needs changing!
