Series 9 Pirate-Themed Submissions
Here be what Series 9 has to offer LEGO Pirate fans…
The BrickLink Designer Program be a path for LEGO Pirate fans to turn their own designs into official LEGO sets, which eventually YOU may buy.
Yer don’t have long!
Builders submit their finest designs (Open Submission), then we vote for our favorites (Crowd Support). Next, the BrickLink Designer Team selects five designs to refine, and during Crowdfunding, yer may pre-order the finished sets.
That be the short of it, the long of it can be in the Series 9 article.
While we await Crowd Support for BrickLink Designer ProgramSeries 9 to commence upon October 6, let’s continue our explorative journey of Brick Perfection’s ship, the Fortuna, which he submitted to three different series!
First Series 5, then Series 6 and finally Series 7 before triumphing in the BrickLink Designer Team’s review.
Fortuna is back! – Completely rebuilt for Series 6! Better, stronger, more detailed, more sophisticated, more polished!
The new and improved Fortuna for Series 6 – spot the changes!
BrickPerfection continues:
Fortuna is a fast sailing frigate designed as a Privateer – a government-commissioned vessel tasked with hunting pirate ships or, deceptively, becoming one. As a true frigate, Fortuna is equipped with 20 cannons and 2 swivel guns.
There will be a boat included if selected as a finalist!
That’s right! The privateers will be able to survive if Fortuna is sunk!
BrickPerfection continues:
This set introduces the unpredictable Privateers to the LEGO Pirates theme, capable of aligning with any faction or pursuing their own adventures. Fortuna includes 12 Minifigures, a striking figurehead, and a small cat to protect supplies from rats.
Putting that into perspective, 10210 Imperial Flagship contains 1,664 pieces, meaning Fortuna boasts 240% more parts!

Physical build of the Fortuna submitted to Series 6
BrickPerfection writes:
Fortuna as reconstructed for BDP Series 6 – here in physical bricks […] The boat isn’t included in the rendered version, but if selected as a finalist one will be added; either prefab or brick-built.
Now with a more curvaceous rear!
BrickPerfection writes:
The reconstructed Fortuna from the rear… the stern decoration has been rearranged and the stern shape is now rounder and more organically integrated into the hull shape.
Series 5 & 6 Comparison
Most pirates probably be lacking photographic memories and may not be able to spot the differences immediately.
Fear not, ye absentminded scallywags! BrickPerfection kindly provides us with comparison photos…
Comparing the changes made to Fortuna as a result of her redesign for BDP Series 6 – here shown as built with physical bricks 😃
The Hold Test
Ok great! Fortuna has received some nifty upgrades since the Series 5, but is she still structurally sound?
BrickPerfection’s obligatory single hand test
BrickPerfection writes:
Needed to add a mandatory picture to show off Fortuna’s sturdiness – still built on a Technic frame, just more efficiently than before. Stability is improved over previous versions – especially at the bow – while using about 80 pieces less that I could utilize for much better detailing! 😃
More Features Video
A second video showcasing the ship’s feature with an emphasis on it’s structural integrity.
BrickPerfection (the magnificent Moritz Krusche) be one of the all time greatest ship builders!
Sailing from Sydney in the land down under (known to some as Australia), BrickPerfection has successfully navigated from the physical age of building, to the digital age, and back again!
We’re accepting submissions from September 15th – September 29th 2025. The best designs have the chance to be Series 9 sets, so get those ideas flowing!
So turns out with the new palette reducing many of the available bricks and generally having time to work out the issues I had with my BDP8 version, I’m working on a large revamp for BDP9.
Since I’ve also gotten myself a new laptop (the ten year old one was kinda in need of replacement), the rendering goes a bit faster, so I could do an early trial render.
Ever since Steve sailed into the Imperial Trading Posts, LEGO Pirates fans have been clamoring for more non-pirate, non-military vessels, yet such a vessel never arrived in official capacity.
Elephant Knight’s submission, the aptly named Merchant Ship could turn those tides…
The last month or two I have been spending a lot of time working on building a ship that I plan to submit for the BDP 9. It’s not quite finished, I still have the interior of the cabin to complete. […] As well as completing the cabin. I will also have some more pictures of the virtual model up soon, but for now, let me know what you think, areas that need improving, and what sort of details would be needed!
Maydayartist has created this gorgeous masterpiece he calls “Colonial Harbor Scene“. There’s a lot of huge buildings in this MOC, as well as a large ship you can see if you follow the link to the forums. The cobblestone street is my personal favorite part, but there are many great designs throughout! Even the Photoshop images are stunning.
The harbour is bustling with activity
The Imperial Armada patrols in their shiny gold armour
Imagine building a large diorama and then rigging the ship sails!
Maydayartist writes:
Hi there,
After a busy half year with many new creations done as an employee of a LCP I start build some own mocs.
In addition, I have joined a group of authors to publish a construction book titled “Build your own LEGO Knights Realm“.
The publishing date will be in September and for more information I will start a new topic if it is done.
And for this we need some background material to present some bigger and some little special MOCs.
One of this little MOCsis a medieval crane.
He should be placed in a harbor scene with some houses, figures and a ship.
The ship was easily done – my Revenge.
For the rest I build some buildings and a heavy time required cobblestones street in one week.
The result was better than expected, so I decided to present it here as well.
The final picture will be high resolution and professional Photoshoped.
My pictures are done after that and Photoshoped too. But more quick & dirty
Enjoy!
This is the photo used on every website (which is why we didn’t use it for the featured image)
It’s looking a bit quieter from this end
From the east we can see the crane and fort
The ship is well armed so pirates should think twice about plundering!
Too bad Maydayartist didn’t take more photos of this ship

“The Big Unofficial LEGO Builder’s Book” by Joachim Klang, Philipp Honvehlmann, Lutz Uhlmann and Tim Bischoff.
This book was officially published in November 2014.
This new unofficial LEGO builders book combines the fascinating world of medieval knights and other fantasy kingdoms with iconic items and great building ideas all illustrated with easy-to-follow step-by-step building instructions – a real well of inspiration to create your own castles, fortresses and catapults, not forgetting some fantasy figures such as the awesome dragon from Game of Thrones!
The chap in green is a very important looking fellow. He seems to have his own private guards.
About the Builder…
Several years ago, Maydayartist shared his wonderful creations in the LEGO Pirates Forum. He has quite an impressive collection of MOCs on Brickshelf and we’re not 100% certain but this may be his Instagram profile. Or it could be one of the authors he collaborated with – go find out! If you’re fluent in Deútsche, you can also read the “Colonial Hafen” topic on www.1000steine.de.

“The Black Pearl… Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship in LEGO bricks! Who else wants to sail with me?”
Ahoy @LEGO ! Ye’ve sent me me beloved ship… and not a drop of rum missing! Much obliged, me hearties! 🍹🦜
The new LEGO Black Pearl is an almost perfect set… if only that were what it was called 🫢#10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate may have a silly name but it is by far one of the BEST pirate ships LEGO has ever released! 🏴☠️
“Black Pea… Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship is massive!”
Set looks great! 10 fabric sails, Captain Sparrow’s cabin, treasure chest under the deck, beautiful figurehead. It’s really big – 64cm long and high, 23cm wide.
The gun extension mechanism with automatic shutter opening is excellent. I must admit, I played with it for a good few dozen minutes after completing each stage of construction. It’s very satisfying to see how smoothly it works.
8 Minifigures + Figurehead one, for example Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Gibbs, Cotton, Anamarii, Marty, Elizabeth Swann and Hector Barbossa.
What I don’t like:
The cabin opening is strangely designed. To lift the deck and reveal what’s inside, you have to unhook two decorative elements that block the hinges. It’s a strange solution.
I miss the mast rigging found on the Endurance model. It adds so much to the ship’s design and authenticity.

LEGO Icons The Black Pe— I mean, Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship, coming Sept. 12th! I actually got to speak to the LEGO designer about it this morning, can’t wait to share!
When the worst thing people have to say is the name of the set… Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship is stunning and worth the hype. I have never built a LEGO ship like this before. I will add that this LEGO set is quite pricey as seems to sadly be the trend these last few months, however I won’t be surprised to see people wanting to get their hands on this one right away.
See, plenty of happy fans! Who didn’t have fork out $380 USD
Why “Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship” and not the “Black Pearl“?
Well, that was an internal creative decision, you see.

Whenever a LEGO building contest is held, it’s only natural the winning entries receive the most attention, yet it’s important not to overlook the honourable mentions.
This was no exception in the Return of the Classic Pirates Contest, voraciously competitive with many competent entrants. While the winners well-deserved their position, Classic Pirates aspire to bring other great entries to your attention.
“Rock Island Refuge” by CaptainDarkNStormy is one such build, a modernised rendition on yet another classic LEGO Pirates set from the days of yore. The good captain arrived at the final build by effectively utilising feedback provided by the Creative Critics, so now we shall delve further into its creation…
CaptainDarkNStormy writes:
I think I’ve reached a final product. I’m going a way for work tonight so I won’t have time to make any more changes. Thanks to all you creative critics out there who provided me with insight. Without further ado…
Behold, Captain Redbeard’s newly renovated Rock Island Refuge. 31 years have passed since the famous menace of the Brick Seas took over this rocky isle. Now he and his crew have a place to relax and party in between plundering stints on the Barracuda. A second cannon and weapons cache have been added to defend against the pesky Bluecoats. The dock has been expanded and crane upgraded. Some secrets still remain though. Let’s see what the Island looks like in 2023.
Rock Island Refuge in 2023
So what does it look like in the modern age?
Here’s the overview
We arrive by raft just like in the 1991 set but get serenaded as we approach the docks
What’s that over in the fresh produce department?
An old 4-legged monkey has gone bananas!
Captain Redbeard prides his armoury for those occasions when uninvited guests visit
Redbeard now hosts dinner parties
The crew needs rum to motivate them for their next mission… they can’t wait to start imbibing with Redbeard!
YARR HARR! Cheers me hearties!
Rum and toucan is a superb combination for dinner…
And here is the toucan rookery to ensure future roasts
A secret hidey hole for treasure chest
The oven dungeon
Play features from the original set have also been incorporated
An unexpected surprise! This version includes furry friends
Time to relax after a hard day drinking rum
The Imperial Armada didn’t quite escape with the treasure…
The Raft
A defining play feature of the official Rock Island Refuge set is the inclusion of a raft; an auxiliary build which could happily exist as a set in its own right.
In fact, it draws parallels to 6257 Castaway’s Raft released a couple of years earlier.
This version boasts a cloth sail and wood texture pontoons
Captain DarkNStormy has spared no detail and also applied a modern makeover to the raft.
The original raft seemed a lot more “flatter”
Although, perhaps it could be argued this upgrade has undermined some key features of the original, for example;
the mast is far more prominent and positioned dead-centre on deck with a much larger sail
the oar rudder is absent
the deck is flat, whereas the original appears to be more precariously fashioned from whatever flotsam was available
Also included is a barrel of fish and a seagull to eat them
Despite these revisions, Captain DarkNStormy’s raft is a welcome inclusion. He’s corrected some design flaws, because seriously; who wants sail around on a draft with an incomplete deck at risk of their foot getting caught? A potential tripping hazard that results in stumbling overboard – a safety violation has been averted!
Work In Progress…
CaptainDarkNStory intermittently teased members of the Classic Pirates Facebook Group with progress images as the build gradually came together.
The main structure of the build is done…
What will be inside?
A little hidey hole for the gold
A Thanksgiving dinner isn’t complete without the crew!
Almost done… just need to build that great big whopping crane
And the crane receives a significant upgrade – now they can haul fresh pineapples!
All built – but the refuge looks a little empty… the crew has yet to arrive…
The Original 6273 Rock Island Refuge
6273 Rock Island Refuge was released in 1991 and included 381 pieces at a retail price of US$66, or approximately US$149 in 2023 when adjusted for inflation.
To obtain a brand new copy of this set today, you’ll have to shell out a whopping US$1,500 on markets like eBay…
The original Rock Island Refuge
Known as “Port Jamaica” in some waters, the original set was built upon a more verdant version of the ramped based plate that was introduced with 6278 Elorado Fortress.
Rock Island Refuge supplanted 6270 Forbidden Island as the Pirates dominant stronghold, with it’s more robust structure containing almost 200 more parts.
The raft again
All the staples of its predecessor are present; the jungle hideout comprised of black castle walls, rope bridges, ratlines, palm leave and barred dungeon. Along with mandatory piratical accessories which include; two printed Jolly Roger flags, both large and small, a treasure chest, barrel, flaming torches, cannon and treasure map. Not mention the returning fauna; shark, monkey and parrot.
Being more grandiose than Forbidden Island, further innovation was required. Aside from the base plate amplifying the fornication’s dominance, Rock Island Refuge offers a crane with rope to hoist cargo from the dock, a grated hold to store that precious cargo, a sizeable raft, and a piece exclusive to the set: a blue striped fabric sail.
A crew of five pirate minifigures are stationed at the refuge, including Captain Redbeard and his usual cohorts, albeit colour-swapped slightly, and adorned with flintlock pistols, muskets and cutlasses. Two blue coat Soldier minifgures make a daring attack on the docks, the commander charges forth with sabre drawn, although the pirates seemingly haven’t noticed.
Many fantastic entries were submitted and the Classic Pirates would loved to have awarded more prizes, but for this contest we were limited to a maximum of 5 winners. So unfortunately, great entries like CaptainDarkNStormy’s Rock Island Refuge only receive an honourable mention and our utmost respect for taking the time to participate!
About the Builder…
CaptainDarkNStormy (Chris Boyd) is one of those xennials who collected the first wave of classic LEGO Pirate sets back in 1989. As a teenager during the 90s he succumbed to his Dark Age, which persisted well into his adulthood. Fortunately for the LEGO Pirates fan base, his mother spared all his old sets for when he emerged in AFOL-dom during 2020.
In the 2020′s he’s a frequent contributor to the LEGO Pirates Forum and specializes in revitalizing Classic Pirates sets. Additionally, he contributes his spare time as a moderator for the Classic Pirates Facebook group which the Classic Pirates thank him for very much!
Dive into his Flickr stream and Instagram profile for the latest updates on his new builds, and if you’d like to create them yerself, he’s made some of his designs available on ReBrickable.
What Do Yer Think?
Has CaptainDarkNStormy built a worthy update to Rock Island Refuge? Or could it be improved upon? If you were remaking the set, what would you have done differently?
Just image… if this were an officially released LEGO set…
Do you think this entry should have a won a prize in the Return of the Classic Pirates Contest? Maybe even first prize?

Avoid the hassle of piecing together individual parts! The official Pirate Bundle available via the Pick a Brick section on LEGO.com’s offers a swift and stylish solution.
Five minifigures — including a captain and four assorted sea mates — this themed bundle is ideal for expanding yer pirate ranks with swashbuckling figures and accessories.
1x Pirate Captain
Head with eye patch and beard, torso with blue jacket with brown leather strap, peg leg, bicorne, and flintlock pistol
4x Pirate Crew Members
Same head as captain, red striped torso, brown legs, red bandana and cutlass
It’s designed for one-click army building, so instead of hunting down individual parts, you can just hit “Pick all pieces” and add the full crew to your cart.
This be part of The LEGO Group’s grand scheme to provide Castle, Viking, and Pirate fans with minifigure reinforcements like the previous Battle Packs and minifigure sets of the Classic Theme era.
Yer can also find selections for Medieval (I.e. Castle), Vikings and Pirates offering a wider range of parts than their bundle counterparts… although, yer must do all the choosin’ yerself.
Heads-up!
Many of the sets these parts originate from are retiring in 2025, so the bundles may be an express lane to clear out old parts… meaning they will vanish completely!
Well, this be a fantastic initiative for army builders who strive for conformity in their troops. Especially if yer aim to bolster yer Imperial Guard or Soldier forces.
Click “Pick All Pieces” and voila! They’re selected for you
But five crewmen who look almost identical, sans a captain who features a different torso and legs?
Pirates generally have quite varied, gnarled appearances… unless they’re quintuplets.
Upon zooming in we discovered they’re actually clones…
Nonetheless, LEGO Pirate fans be ever grateful that pirate minifigures haven’t been overlooked on this occassion!
What Do Yer Think?
Pre-selected and ready to deploy, these bundles of joy are perfect for MOC builds, display scenes, or injecting new life into sets like Barracuda Bay or Eldorado Fortress.

Junks first set sail around the time of the Han Dynasty (circa 200 BCE). These vessels weren’t just sturdy — they grew more cunning and evolved with the winds of time, throughout the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties.
Junks weren’t just for haulin’ treasure — they sailed for war, trade, and discovery. Most famously Admiral Zheng He, who’s fleet boasted ships near 120 metres / 400 feet long — bigger than galleons, bolder than Loong myths!

From the harbors of Japan to the deltas of Vietnam and the spice-swept isles of Indonesia, these Eastern sea crafts left their mark. Shipwrights far and wide took a page from the junk’s cunning design — her stout hull, flat bottom, and cunning rudder — crafting their own variants to brave monsoon winds and merchant treachery alike.
